Warsaw is surrounded by attractive tourist destinations, e.g. good walking and horse-riding spots, as well as places where various sports can be practised. Mazovia is a region that has something to offer both to those interested in its natural beauty, and to the tourist who wishes to gain an insight into its cultural heritage. Not far from the city there stretch the vast forest areas of the Kampinoski National Parks (Kampinoski Park Narodowy) and the Mazovia and Chojnów Landscape Park (Mazowiecki i Chojnowski Park Krajobrazowy). A little further on you will find the remains of the Kurpie Green Primeval Forest (Kurpiowska Puszcza Zielona) and the White Primevał Forest (Puszcza Biała). Those wishing to rest and relax should visit Zegrzyński Lake (Zalew Zegrzyński), or the beaches on the Wkra, Bug, Narew and Pilica Rivers. Along the tourist trails of Mazovia, you will come across the ruins of the castle of the Mazovian knights in Czersk, the Museum-Arsenal in Liw, the remnants of the Modlin Fortress(4.), the fort ruins in Bieniaminów and along the Narew River, as well as historic church buildings - the monastery in Czerwińsk-upon-Vistula, Płock Cathedral on Tumski Hill and the Gothic Church in Brochów.

The renovated palaces and mansion houses of the nobility are a real asset of the Mazovian landscape. We particularly recommend a visit to the residence in Żelazowa Wola(2.) which was the birthplace of Frederic Chopin. It is also worthwhile going to Opinogóra(5.) a village which once was a family property of one of the most renowned poets of Polish Romanticism - Zygmunt Krasiński, and where the Neo-Renaissance palace was corwerted into a Museum of Romanticism. Then again, in Gołotczyzna, a village located nearby, you will find the Museum of Positivism.

At Pruszków near Warsaw you can see the interesting collection housed in the Museum of Ancient Metaliurgy. Tourists can also visit numerous skansen museums, where country buildings, agricultural and household utensils, and regional clothes are gathered in an environment similar to that from which they originate. Particulariy interesting skansens include the Museum of the Mazovian Countryside in Sierpc, the Museum of the Radom Countryside(3.) in Radom, the Kurpie Skansen in Nowogród, and a small skansen - the Kurpie Farm - in Kadzidło. Regional events, organized in the Mazovia for years now, offer a great opportunity to get to know the local folk culture. Each year on Palm Sunday the "Kurpie Palms" ("Palmy Kurpiowskie") competition is held in the village of Łyse. The "Apple - Blossom Day" ("Święto kwitnących jabłoni") is celebrated in May in Grójec. "The Sanniki Sunday" ("Niedziela Sannicka") is organized each June in Sanniki, and International Folk Meetings "Kupalnocka" (Międzynarodowe Spotkania Folklorystyczne "Kupalnocka") are held in Ciechanów. On the first Sunday of July the Folklore Festival of "Mazovia to Warsaw" (Festyn Folklorystyczny "Mazowsze Warszawie") is organized in Warsaw, and on the last Sunday of August the "Kurpie Honey-Gathering" ("Miodobranie Kurpiowskie") takes place in Zawodzie near Myszyniec. Each year the Oskar Kolberg Nation-wide Festival of the Works of Folk Artists (Ogólnopolski Przegląd Dorobku Twórców Ludowych im. Oskara Kolberga) is organized.
